The history comes at the prehispanish, when it was the center of Zoque life in a place named Ocahual, who means warrior people; after the Aztecs named the place Tecpatán, from the Nahuátl tekpatl, flint and the tlan suffix to denote abundance. Tecpatán was probably the prehispanish spirit center region, from whose it started the Zoque evangelization. Population is 38,000 inhabitants and located at 290 meters over sea level.
