The word Koa—painal—lan means snakes that ran; it comes from the Nahuátl language. The place is located in the middle of the state, over the North plain; it is famous since the conquest, due to its similarity to Painalá,
which Bernal Díaz del Castillo describes as being the origin of "La Malinche."
This community has been distinguished through the years for the evangelization by monks from
an order known as "La orden de Santo Domingo." Copainalá has been known for its famous big houses and constructions, and it has passed from small village to town and to
city; at present there are 19,821 inhabitants; the city shows a vernacular architecture.

This important monument lodges in the interior Colonial images; it is intended as a testimonial monument that reflects the evangelization
from Dominic at Zoque land. In its main story, a T form is used in the same building as in other constructions. It has a belfry, and a Dominic frontispiece from the XVI Century
and beginnings of XVII Century. Recent remodeling has been made to rescue the original beauty.

This building is one of the best kept in the area; since it is a recent building, the frontispiece is pinnacled with a cornice and three bells, in
an austere building; the interior keeps the most treasure, the carving in wood and ornamented recover; the images belong to the Christ column, resurrection Christ, Ecce
homo, Señor Pensador, Señor de la meditation, Santa Ana, in addition to the canvas of the Santísima Trinidad and el Señor del Santo Entierro.

89 Km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, on the Federal Highway, going to Central Hidroeléctrica Ing. Manuel Moreno Torres (Chicoasén) follows to 102 Highway, through San Fernando, Chicoasén and Copainalá.
There is transportation from Tuxtla Gutiérrez to Coapilla and from there to Tapalapa.
Since the weather is fresh, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes.
