Description

The reserve has 50,000 hectare, created in 1982 to preserve fauna and flora in the state’s North; predominant trees are 20 meters high, as a part of the landscape, insuperable camouflage, is kept at a place like Sima de las Cotorras; there are mahogany, chicozapotes and mojús, night monkeys, jaguar, cougar, harpy eagle, spider monkeys complete the rich natural variety of this reservation, including the wonderful Cañón de la Venta and several Zoque archeological zones, still kept by the jungle.

It has a cavern system with many underground rivers and it has been considered one of the most important forests of Meso America.

Hot, sub humid; heavy rains June to October.

Ocozocoautla and Cintalapa municipalities in the state’s central region.

How to get there?

55 Km from Ocozocoautla to Apic-Pac, there is deviation to Rancho San Luis, after 51 Km on a ground road to Campamento Emilio Rabasa. Another way is through Malpaso, by fluvial via as far as Campamento El Encajonado in the outlet of La Venta river.

Travel hints

It can be visited mainly in spring and winter season, but it is suggested to contact first the Dirección de la Reserva Selva El Ocote. It is suggested to bring map of the region, hand light, light clothing, sweat shirt, comfortable shoes for long walks and binoculars.
