Description

The great height of Tacaná, 4100 meters, permits to find in it all kinds of weather and vegetation from Sierra Madre. The border with Guatemala goes along its top according to 1882 treaty. The Tacaná starts a series of Central America volcanoes, and its rich sides are heavily inhabited, although this volcano is active.

Zacatonales grow on the highest places to permit to reach the top, the only high paramo in Chiapas, where small plants grow. This plants take advantage of the air layers warmth next to the ground during the sun hours.

Weather

Semi hot, humid, with rains from May to October; hottest month is April. Average temperature is 20° C. and in the lowest part it is 10° C.

It is located in the state’s Soconusco region, in the border of Guatemala and Mexico, in the municipality of Unión Juárez.

Howe to get there?

From Unión Juárez, there is a 3 Km to Talquián village and then 7 Km of ground to Chiquihuites , where to start Volcano climbing.

Mountain walk and observation, flora and fauna to observation.

Travel hints

It can be visited all seasons, but on dry —November to April— it is the adequate to climb and reach the top. It is suggested to be accompanied by a guide that knows the Volcano, that can be found in Chiquihuites. It is recommended to bring very protective clothes and comfortable for long walks, adequate shoes, be in a good physical condition and walk as early as possible. If interested in camping, it is recommended not do it in the crater, because there is danger of electric accidents. It is best to do it in a place visible to the volcano keepers.
