Description

73 Km from Comitán, at Cristóbal Colón, was mentioned in XIX Century by John L. Stephen as “an incomparable and wild beauty, shadowy shores and majestic trees and tropical forests, so clear water as crystal and a foot long fishes, swimming as if the fishes do no exist.”

Almost two centuries ago, Lagos de Colón is still a small paradise, combining natural beauty and archeological vestige. High Affluent River produces many small transparent pools; among these water falls there are Lagartero city archeological vestiges of the Mayann culture; this is one of the bigger archeological architectural stone carvings. It comes from the Mayans period (100 AD) until the conquest.

Probably the Mayan culture is one of the biggest of high Grijalva, with the later Mayan (700 to 900 AD), it is considered a great civic and religious center, located at one of the bigger islands, known as El Limonar, at the South of the miry place; Lagartero is integrated by 12 structures, some of them reaching 12 meters inheight; there are two game grounds for ball game—Juego de Pelota, platforms, and high altars housing. The inhabitants work water place to create channels for irrigation and defense.

How to get there?

Take the way of La Trinitaria to Frontera Comalapa, 190 highway to a 12 Km deviation to Cristóbal Colón; there is a 2 Km way in chicozapote trees to get the place.

What to do?

Visit to archeological, trekking, camping, flora observation, rowing and horse riding.
